Kasargod, Jun 21: Due to copious rains, which have been lashing Kerala coast since the last some days, two persons including a lady lost their lives. With this, the number of people killed due to rain this year has risen to five. In addition, rain has also inflicted heavy losses.
Berike Abdulla from Delampady Ujampady Hidayath Nagar drowned in a pool. K Tambayimma (75), who fell into a rivulet at Perala Karicheri when washing clothes on the bank, lost her life.
Work has also severely affected the working in 13 gram panchayat offices in the district. Normal life has been thrown out of gear, houses have collapsed, and agriculture has suffered. Over a hundred houses have suffered damages due to rain. Sea erosion has worsened, adding to the worries of those living near seashore. It is reported that during the last 20 days, the quantum of rain received in the district has been 888 cm.
Sea erosion is particularly severe at Cherangai, Nellikunje, and Light House area. The sea has encroached upon the shore for a stretch of about two km. Houses of Kalyani, Upendra, Balakrishna, Pavitra, Pushpa, Narayan and Madhav Karnavar near the Light House are facing danger from the rising level of sea.
