Kasargod, Jun 20: In a suspected hawala case, the Kasargod police on Thursday June 20 seized Rs 29 lac in cash from a person at the railway station here.
The arrested has been identified as Abdul Aziz (54), a resident of Kannur.
The police, acting on prior information, caught him as soon as he arrived by a train from Kozhikode and searched his belongings.
The police found Rs 28,91,750 in denominations of 1000, 500 and 100 rupee notes.
Sources said that police had received information of hawala money coming into Kasargod and had kept a search on for the past two days.
However, on interrogation, Azid reportedly denied that it was hawala money and claimed that he had sold old gold in exchange for the money. However, no bill or documents were found in his possession, and the currency notes were found to be bound with rubber bands.
The police also seized his ATM and pan cards.
It is not known what Aziz had intended to do with the money or whether it was to be handed over to anyone. A clear picture will emerge only after thorough investigation, police said.
The case has been handed over to Kozhikode IT department for further investigations.
