M'lore: Dr Alexandra from Hungary to perform Bharatanatyam on Jun 22

Media Release

Mangalore, Jun 20: Dr Alexandra Szoke from Hungary will be performing Bharatanatyam on Saturday June 22 at 6 pm at Sanathana Natyalaya, Mangalore.

Alexa’s first experience of Bharatanatyam came when she joined Sanathana Natyalaya Mangalore, who are currently organising a series of performances to mark their 30th anniversary.

She moved to Mangalore 18 months ago accompanying her husband Ian Mick Cook, who researches urbanisation in the city as part of his doctoral studies.

Dr Alexa says, “I instantly fell in love with the dance thanks to the enthusiasm, warmth and love shown by my guru Sharadamani Shekar, under whose guidance I immersed into the world of Bharatanatyam.”

As her time in Mangalore draws to a close, she offers a humble recital of the pieces she learned so far in the school that has, in many ways, become her second home. "I would like to thank to Sanathana Natyalaya for the opportunity to perform and also to Radhika Shetty, founder of Nrityaangan Charitable Trust and performing artiste in India and the USA, for her friendship, support and inspiring teaching over the last year," she said.

About Dr Alexa:

Alexa, born in Budapest, Hungary, completed her PhD in social anthropology from the Central European University in Hungary and the Max Planck Institute in Germany, with research on the local state in rural Hungary. She is currently a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Vienna, Austria.
