Ajman: GMU hosts seminar on diabetes complication

Ajman, Jun 19: A seminar on Diabetes Complication - Prevention and Management was organized by College of Pharmacy, a Constituent College of Gulf Medical University (GMU) recently. The seminar accredited by the Ministry of Health for 6 CME hours was well attended by 200 doctors, pharmacists, and nurses from all emirates of UAE. This is the second seminar held by College of Pharmacy, GMU in association with Indian Pharmacists Welfare Council (IPWC).

A series of lectures were delivered on different aspects focusing on diabetes care to minimize complications and maximize patient safety.

Dr L R C Reddy, Vascular Surgeon from Life Care Medical Centre, Sharjah, emphasized the role of Vascular Surgeon in diabetic foot. He clearly explained the recent advances in management and prevention of diabetic foot which could reduce serious complications like foot amputation.

Dr Soundara Rajan, a leading Dermatologist described A to Z Muco-cutaneous complications associated with DM which can be prevented by taking timely measures. During his simple and educative talk he emphasized on what is needed by the clinicians and all healthcare providers dealing with such complications.

Dr Sufian Otoum, from GMU discussed the recent strategies and advancements in Pharmacotherapeutic Management of Macro Vascular Diabetes complications to reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events. He updated the audience on approved drugs recommended by the guidelines for management of certain cardiac conditions.

Dr Mukesh Kumar from Gulf Medical University highlighted the importance of preventing medication errors to improve patient safety in diabetic care. He stressed the need that all healthcare providers should play an active role to report medication errors.

Dr Kishore G Sam, Associate Dean, College of Pharmacy, GMU presented the commonly encountered drug interactions and resulting  adverse drug reactions in diabetic patients due to poly-pharmacy. Vast information on Drug Interactions and ADRs observed in various clinical trials were shared in a simple and interactive way.

Dr Balan Vijay Kumar a leading psychiatrist from Al Soor Clinic, Sharjah, summarized the important considerations to be noted while counseling a diabetic patient on disease control and self-care. He clearly explained various factors to be taken into consideration while counseling a diabetic patient.

“The College of Pharmacy, GMU proposes to host the next conference in the month of November, 2013” informed Prof. Arun Shirwaikar, Dean of College of Pharmacy, GMU.
