Mangalore, Jun 7: Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, N Prakash, warned that building licences will be cancelled without any hesitation, if hygiene is not maintained, and rules are violated at the sites of building construction.
He was addressing a meeting of builders, civil engineers, and health officials of the city corporation, held on Thursday June 6.
“The city corporation has noticed that migrant workers are being made to work at construction sites without providing them basic facilities. The health department of the corporation has surveyed about 383 sites, and found that health and hygiene have not been given the needed importance in most of them,” Prakash said. Informing the participants that as per the said survey, mosquitoes continue to breed in 13 sites, he warned of strict action against erring builders who are found to have ignored the issues during the second survey.
The deputy commissioner, who was told by the builders that mosquitoes tend to increase with the arrival of monsoon, said that it is important to protect the interests of all the concerned, rather than finding excuses. “The district administration will take up steps towards this end. Health department of the municipality has now improved its working. Take steps to provide basic facilities to the workers engaged by you,” he advised.
Prakash said that blocking of drains, and dumping of bulding materials on the roads, are two of the most serious offences, as they create problems for pedestrians and school children in particulars. He warned that if this violation continues unabated, licences will be cancelled instead of imposing fines on the concerned.
In-charge city corporation commissioner, Srikanth Rao, was present.
