Mangalore: World Environment Day celebrated at NMPT

Mangalore, Jun 5: NMPT celebrated the World Environment Day on Wednesday June 5 in a befitting manner. The function was presided over by Dr P Tamilvanan, chairman, NMPT, wherein Dr H Laxmikantha, assistant environment officer, KSPCB was the chief guest, T S N Murthy, IRS deputy chairman was the guest of honour.

M R Hedaoo, chief engineer (civil), NMPT welcomed the gathering and gave the detailed information about the importance of World Environment Day. T S N Murthy, IRS, deputy chairman, NMPT gave a Power Point presentation highlighting the green initiatives taken in the Port in last three years to mitigate pollution related to air and water. deputyChairman also stressed upon the gathering to do their bit to protect the environment which will be enormous in totality.

In his keynote address, Dr H Laxmikantha informed the adverse impacts of bore-wells, biomedical wastes, household hazards, solid waste and food waste. He emphasized the commitment shown by NMPT is excellent and worth evaluating.

Dr P Tamilvanan, chairman, NMPT, in his presidential address informed that Port is complying all the environmental requirements and committed to develop the infrastructure to handle more food grains, etc. Chairman congratulated all the Port employees, Port users who have made sincere collective efforts for making the Port as environment friendly.

The chairman informed that pollution in the vicinity has come down due to various measures adopted by the Port and Port do business by taking care of environment and Port is planting 10,000 saplings during the current year as a part of green initiative.

Capt Pradeep Mohanty, deputy conservator i/c, NMPT proposed the vote of thanks. Bhagyalakshmi was the Master of Ceremony of the programme. The programme concluded with message “Think, Eat, Save”.
