Mangalore, Jun 1: A man along with five of his accomplices have been arrested for stealing gold and cash worth Rs 9 lac from a house belonging to his brother-in-law. The theft was carried out when the family was on vacation.
The arrested are Zakir Hussain and Mohammed Javed of Bunder, Addu Rehman and Mohammed Kabir of Kasargod, Prakash of Suratkal and Ummer of Jokatte. They have been remanded in judicial custody. As the stolen items have not been recovered entirely, the accused will be interrogated further, police said.
The accused allegedly stole Rs 3 lac in cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 6 lac from the residence of Ayub at Vishwas View apartments, Pumpwell-Nanthoor.
The theft took place in April when Shabana, the housewife, along with her two children had been on vacation to Kolkata, while her husband Ayub left for Mumbai on business.
Before leaving, Shabana had given the key of her house to her sister. The sister used to visit the house now and then to ensure everything was in order during the family's absence. She did so on April 22 too.
On April 23, Shabana's neighbours noticed that the front door of her house had been left open, and immediately informed her about it on phone. Shabana, who was still in Kolkata, called her sister and asked her to check the house. When the sister came to the house, she realized that a theft had taken place. She informed Shabana about it and then approached the police. Kadri police arrived at the spot and filed a case.
On May 27, the police received information about three persons loitering near Kadri grounds in a suspicious manner. They visited the spot and took the three into custody, and on investigation, found gold ornaments in their possession. The arrested were identified as Zakir Hussain, Addu Rehman and Mohammed Javed. They confessed that they had carried out the theft at Ayub's house, police said. Interrogation revealed that Zakir Hussain was the husband of Shabana's another younger sister.
The three were interrogated further, and based on their statements, the other three were also arrested.
House owner Ayub runs a footwear business in the city. Zakir knew that his brother-in-law was well-to-do and also that the family kept their valuables at home. He got Kabir and Addu Rehman to help him break open the house door and carry out the theft. It is said that Kabir and Rehman have several cases against them in Kasargod police station. Ummer too is a seasoned thief and has several cases against him in police stations in Mangalore, said the police.
The amusing part of the incident is that Zakir had so far pretended to be innocent, and had even visited Kadri police station along with the family in connection with the theft. He was even present when the case was registered!
