Udupi, May 31: BJP Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel on Thursday May 30 slammed chief minister Siddaramaiah and said that the government was showing double standards in banning gutka and proposing cheap liquor at the same time.
“Chief minister Siddaramaiah cannot take decisions without thinking about its consequences. On the one hand he says gutka will be banned and on the other hand the government is planning to introduce liquor at cheaper prices,” he said at a press meet held at the BJP office here on Thursday.
He added that Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are known for arecanut farming. “The chief minister should consider the livelihood of farmers who grow areca nuts. If Gutka is banned, the government should come up with alternative arrangements for these farmers,” added Kateel.
He also queried as to why the government is not banning tobacco items like ‘beedi’ and cigarette. “The chief minister should not take one-sided decisions,” he added.
Kateel appealed to the local MLA to show interest in protecting the Sri Krishna Temple. “Pramod Madhwaraj should make the government understand that bringing the Sri Krishna Temple under the religious endowment department or implementing cow slaughter will not benefit the Congress government,” added Kateel.
“The new government is very interested in taking decisions effecting the farmers and hurting religious sentiments,” he said.
