Bangalore/Mangalore, May 23: Representatives of the Union of Visual Media Reporters met state chief minister, Siddaramaiah, at his residence on Wednesday May 22, and submitted a memorandum seeking withdrawal of cases against television reporter Naveen Soorinje, and cameraman Sharan, filed by the police.
They said that the police had registered criminal cases against these persons and arrested them out of vengeance.
“Relating to these cases, the state High Court has already granted bail to Naveen Soorinje. Sharan continues to be in judicial custody. These journalists had visited the venue of the incident just for the purpose of reporting. Even Vijayakumar, who had filed complaint about the incident, has brought this fact to the notice of the court. We have already provided real picture of the incident to the concerned,” the memorandum said.
The journalists have reminded in the memorandum, that Siddaramaiah, who was the leader of the opposition in the assembly at the time the incident occurred, had taken the then BJP government to task, expressing his stiff opposition to the arrest of journalists and depriving them of the right to expression.
They have also urged the chief minister to conduct detailed inquiry against the police officers who were behind registering criminal cases against innocent journalists with malicious intentions, and with the aim of covering up their dereliction of duty, and to take stringent action against them.
