Udupi, May 22: Udyavar Sports Club organized a three-day national-level cricket tournament in memory of Late Manjunath Udyavar at Panchayat Ground, Udyavar.
Guest of honour was Haji Abdul Jaleel Sahib and youth leader Riyaz Palli. The Tournament was inaugurated by all religious leaders including Fr Cyprian Pinto, parish priest, St Francis Xavier’s Church, Udyavar, Haji Abdul Rasheed Rahamani, priest, Jamia Masjid, Udyavar, and Ram Moorthi Bhat. As a symbol of peace, love, and togetherness they blew bunches of balloons in the air.
Haji Abdul Jaleeb Sahib presided over the function and said that Manjunath Udyavar’s contribution to the village was immense. A three-day match in his memory will be a moral felicitation for his work from Udyavar Sports Club and the villagers. Nagesh Kumar, PA to AICC general secretary Oscar Fernandes, was on the stage.
Chief guest was Vijay Kumar, panchaya president, said that such matches will bring out local talent and congratulated the players.
Hanif Yusuf, member, gram panchayat, Ragunath Kotian, member, Kadekar gram panchayat, and others were present.
BBC Agrahara, Malpe Sports Club and Cultural club, Udupi friends, Davangere, and others were the main local teams. There were teams from Kerala, Mumbai and Chennai also. A total of 19 teams were present. The performances of local teams were very disappointing because all the teams fell out in the second round itself.
One semi final (one set) was between AK Sports Udupi and Santhosh Nagara which the former won. The other was between Bangalore Nash and Kundapur Johnson which saw the former winning. Both the teams played a very interesting and competitive match.
AK won the tournament and took home Rs 2 lac in cash and a trophy while the runners-up got Rs 1 lac and a trophy.
The match successfully ended with the closing ceremony in the presence of Haji Abdul Jaleeb Sahib, Amruth Shenoy, vice-president, Youth Congress, Udupi and Chickmagalur, and Divakar Kundar, member, zilla panchayat.
For organizing this event for the third time, Riyaz Palli was felicitated
Krishna Moorthi Acharya, Ronald Manohar, Karkala, Jithendra Shetty Sadik, and Sadashiva Kotian, president, Billava Mahajana Sangha, were present.
