Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah dies

Chandigarh, May 9 (IANS): Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay who was in a hospital here after being attacked in a Jammu jail last week died Thursday morning, doctors said.

Ranjay, who was extremely critical for the last few days and had suffered renal failure Wednesday, died just before 8 a.m. Thursday at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here.

The Pakistani was in deep coma ever since he was flown in here from Jammu last Friday. He was serving life imprisonment at Jammu's Kot Bhalwal Jail.

He was attacked last Friday by an Indian prisoner and then flown from Jammu to Chandigarh for treatment.

The information regarding his death has been given to the central government. The same is likely to be conveyed to the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, officials said.

Ranjay had developed jaundice and other internal infections Tuesday, doctors said.

Two members of Ranjay's family had arrived here Tuesday from Pakistan. They had appealed to the Indian government to repatriate him to Pakistan.

The attack on Ranjay took place a day after Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner in Pakistan, succumbed to grievous injuries following a murderous assault in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Pakistan seeks international probe into Sanaullah's death

New Delhi, May 9 (IANS):
The Pakistan High Commission has requested the Indian government to institute an international probe into the death of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who died Thursday in a Chandigarh hospital after being attacked in Jammu jail last week.

"We have requested the government of India for an international inquiry into the brutal attack on the Pakistani citizen. We request the government of India to immediately give his body to his family members so the funeral can take place according to Islamic rituals," Manzoor Ali Memon, one of the three diplomats granted consular access to the prisoner, told a TV channel.

Sanaullah, who had been at the PGIMER hospital after his attack in Jammu's Kot Bhalwal jail May 3, died just before 8 a.m. Thursday.

"We are in deep grief and we are shocked. We express our deep condolences to Sanaullah's family and people of Pakistan for the brutal and extra judicial killing of the innocent citizen of Pakistan. The killing has taken place under the nose of Jammu and Kashmir jail authorities," Memon said.

The Pakistani had been in deep coma since he had been flown to Chandigarh from Jammu last Friday.

Sanaullah had suffered renal failure Wednesday.

"There is a need for agreement of security and safety of prisoners in jail," Memon told a news channel here.

The attack on Sanaullah took place a day after Sarabjit Singh, an Indian prisoner in Pakistan, succumbed to grievous injuries following a murderous assault in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail.

Sanaullah was arrested in 1996 and charged with involvement in a bomb blast at Katra near the Hindu shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi in 1994 which left 10 people dead. He was serving life term in the Jammu jail.

India will hand over Sanaullah's body: Shinde

New Delhi, May 9 (IANS):
India will send back the body of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah, who succumbed to his injuries sustained in an attack in Jammu's Kot Bhalwal jail, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said Thursday.

"The ministry of external affairs is coordinating with the Pakistani authorities to complete the formalities to send his body back home," Shinde told reporters here.

Asked about Pakistan's demand for an international probe, Shinde said: "I cannot comment on this now as no demand has come to us till now. When the demand comes, I will tell you."

Sanaullah was hospitalised at the Chandigarh hospital after his attack May 3, and died just before 8 a.m. Thursday.

Pakistan has demanded an investigation into the incident and said the culprits must be brought to justice.

Abdullah apologizes to Sanaullah's family

Srinagar, May 9 (IANS):
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Thursday offered his "sincere apology" to the family of Sanaullah who died in a Chandigarh hospital six days after being attacked in a Jammu jail.

"Although it's scant consolation, I'd like to offer a sincere apology to the family..." Abdullah tweeted.

The chief minister regretted that such a thing should have happened at all, but assured that those responsible for dereliction of duty in this incident would not go unpunished.

"While the inquiry will fix responsibility for any dereliction of duty, the fact that this (happened) at all is a matter of great regret", he said in another post.

Abdullah thanked doctors at the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu and at PGIMER in Chandigarh for the efforts they made to save Sanaullah's life.

The state government has suspended the jail superintendent of the high security Kot Bhalwal jail where Sanaullah was serving a life term after being convicted by a court.

Vinod Kumar, a former Indian soldier who fatally attacked Sanaullah with a hoe, belongs to Uttrankhand and is being tried for murder.

I refer to Reshmi Salian comments on the death of Pak prisoner. She should have an educated approach while making comments like this. Civilized countries will laugh at us when we preach "Ramayana" to them. Our hands must be clean before we make tall claims about tolerance, virtues etc.

Pakistan wants a international probe on prisoner died in India. Are they following the same thing on their side. A life in Pakistan prison is better than Indian prison or life after. When they alive these government can not do anything to take them out of the prison, after their death they shed a crocodile tear to show the family that they are fighting for their dead body instead of life. Hypocrites and stupid. The public keep writing who is right.

@R.Bhandarkar, M'Lore, We are in 21st century. It is well and good to say "ALL IS WELL". First let us all be Indians and forget the rest. India never attacked any sovereign country. So, none should take it as our shortcoming. We love, respect and treat everyone equal. Pakis just want to show the world that they are superior to Indians. They just want to humiliate India in every possible way. It is futile to have “AMAN KI ASHA OR DOSA". Give them what they deserve. Just see how world respects India and how these pakis are treated world over. Finally I am not for violence. Enough is enough.

While nobody disputes that Pak is a terror & failed State. But we forget our own to show fingers at others. What was happening in K'taka? forgot so fast. We are living in a democracy supposed to be more liberal. Why girls are attacked every now & then in pubs, buses, schools in K'taka in the name of religion? Are they not terrorists? why people die of hunger where grains are rotting in godowns? Girls 5-15 years are raped/killed, is that not terrorism? Certain parts of our country suffer from malnutrition, lack of education, hospitals, no roof on the head. Crores supposed to be for development are stashed in foreign banks, Money sent thru JNURM and many other schemes are usurped by Govt officials, if this is not terrorism then what else is terrorism in a democratic country like ours?

If Pakistan really cares for it's people (I mean to say it's prisner's in India) then it won't allow killing of Indian's languishing in Pakistani jails. If we keep quiet, then Pakistan will do more astocrities and whole world has seen it. I agree Sanaullah didn't kill Sarabhjith and Sarabhjit didn't kill any of the relatives of his killer. Sometimes, these kind of tactics are needed to make Pakistan understand the consequences. If Indian military personnel kills Pakistani terrorists, do you have the same views? If Pakistan really cares for it's people in India, then Pakistan has to follow some conditions. Pakistan cannot take India for granted. It's different story that we have been liberal with terrorists and anti national elements.

I think if we behave like Pakistan and take revenge adopting the tit for tat policy, there is no end for the killings. Remember, our people are more in Pakistani jails, and if the killing spree continues turn by turn,in both countries, can you imaging where will it go and end? Poor innocent prisoners would die for no fault of their on both sides.

Hope jail authorities in both countries take more precautionary measures to safeguard the life of jail inmates.

Any tolerance/intolerance should be left to diplomatic levels. The agony of sarabjit's & Sanaullah's family is the same and so is yours & mine. The life of Indian or Paki is the same and we all have the same blood. Pl do not have any hatred for any human being, if you do so then there is no difference between you and Pakistanis. It may be harsh to say, but we as a community never learnt to come out from the four walls of the Church compound to see what is called "sea of humanity". Such things are never thought at Harvard or St. Aloysius or any other institution. One has to experience in life by getting involved with various communities including dalits & down trodden. Tk u.

Dear Alex..in some cases accused get Death Sentence in India.Judges call it as Rarest of Rare cases and it is justifed too. Action against Pakistan or Pakistani (who damages India's image by mentally or physically) is called Rarest of the Rare cases. So death sentence is the final judgement.
Our neighbours should not take our good humanity as our weakness. We kept silent all these days.Thats why even Sri Lanka,Bangla or Nepal don't care India. They think that anyone can cross border and urinate here..We should be bold, strong.

Lydiyaji, I agree, your comments do reflect general mood of Indian public. But, by resorting to tit for tat actions (intentionally or otherwise) India is loosing diplomatic support it is trying to retain. For a crime committed by a bunch of Pakistanis on our financial capital, our justice system (although delayed) has delivered. In response to that we need not kill a person held in prison. It shows our coward mind-set. A rouge state like Pakistan can do anything as they have ‘NO POLICY’ as their standard policy. In my opinion, India should act bravely and attack the so called ‘training camps’ inside POK in retaliation to the acts of terrorism sponsored by the rogue state. Until the situation improves (i.e. when Pakistan stops exporting terror) India must suspend ALL bi-lateral relationship with Pakistan.

Although I don't support violence, I feel that attack on Pakistani criminal is justified. Sarabhjith Singh was forced to suffer in Pakistan jail and if Indian's keep quiet, then there will be more attacks on Indian prisoners. This is the reply to Pakistan. We don't provoke or we don't want to attack. But if we are attacked, we are not going to keep quiet.

Tit-for-tat is the law of the jungle - we are human beings. Hope another Indian is not attacked in a Pakistan prison. But if our government can give royal treatment to Italian murderers, why not minimum security and human treatment to the rest!

Pakistan is a rouge and failed state and if we follow them can we call ourselves as a civilised and responsible nation. Christianity to which you belong and practice, with all respect to it, preaches and practices forgiveness and doesnt talk about revenge. Is it Sanaullas fault that Sarabjit is killed??? Sanaullah would have liked his freedom in exchange for the freedom of Sarabjit....Amazing and rationale comment maam.

A dog is a tamed animal and its keeper ensures that it is rabies free. But the DOG you are referring is to, is not a tamed one but a stray, rabid den which needs to be shot dead. Well, lets do it one-by-one.

Fortunately Sanaullah is attacked and eventually dead, after our citizen is killed similarly by them. Imagine if we were the first to do it !

Now, remove all internal organs and toss them off to dogs ! Return just the hollow carcass to his family members as they did with the mortal remains of Sarabjit Singh !
