Mangalore, May 8: The contest between BJP’s Krishna Palemar, a seasoned politician and former minister, and B Mohiuddin Bava of the Congress in Mangalore (north) assembly constituency saw a seesaw battle since the beginning of the counting process today.
Krishna Palemar held on to his lead for a considerably long period, before certain booths proved to be totally favourable to the Congress candidate.
The victory margin is around 2,000. The fact that Vijay Kumar Shetty, who was a strong contender for the Congress ticket from this constituency, had revolted against the party’s decision to allot ticket to businessman and KPL team owner, B A Mohiuddin Bava, had given rise to jitters in Congress camp.
With the efforts of senior leaders like Janardhan Poojary, the flaring tempers died down, and Shetty agreed to work for the victory of Congress candidate. The timely mediation by the Congress leaders to nip the revolt in the bud perhaps paved way for the victory of Bava.
Bava had earlier fought the election and lost, and several Congress activists had voiced their concern about his candidature, as they felt that he was not a winning candidate. However, Bava has proved them wrong. BJP will now have to re-jig their strategies by taking stock of where they went wrong in this constituency, where businessman-turned-politician, Krishna J Palemar, ruled the roost in the recent years.
