New Delhi, May 7 (IANS): Destitute women will now get some reprieve with the National Commission for Women and a public sector company coming together to build shelters for them across India, a minister said Tuesday.
A Memorandum of Understand (MoU) to this effect was signed between the NCW and the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO).
"As and when required, we will provide technical expertise to the commission (NCW) to set up such shelters," Minister for Urban Poverty and Alleviation Ajay Maken told reporters here.
The NCW will identify the areas where the project has to be undertaken keeping in mind the vulnerability of the women and their need along with identification of a suitable implementing agency, an official said.
The HUDCO on the other hand will provide financial assistance for implementation of these projects along with technical advice, if required.
Under the MoU, the NCW and HUDCO will cooperate in the areas of re-construction of existing structures where women in distress are housed, providing for living quarters.
