Toronto, May 4 (IANS): The funeral of five members of an Indo-Canadian family, who died in a horrific road accident April 28 in Surrey, British Columbia, was held Friday with hundreds of people in attendance.
The funeral of Reena Arjot, wife of Indo-Canadian businessman Gurmit “Jolly” Sachdeva, his son Aanish, daughter Jessica, mother Vidya Wanti Sachdeva and sister Neelam Rani Dhingra, was held at Riverside Funeral Home at Delta, British Columbia, CBC News reported.
The mourners, who attended the funeral, said the family was overcome with grief over
this tragedy.
The five members of the family were killed when the Toyota Corolla they were travelling
in was smashed by a Dodge Caravan that had ran a red light.
The impact of the crash was such that the Toyota car broke into two.
The Sachdeva family members were returning home from a religious service when the accident took place.
One of the mourners, Gurcharan Singh Bagrit, said the entire Indo-Canadian community would help the family in this time of grief.
"Every type of help, people will help, people will go to their house and whatever is required, they will help, because it is a very sad incident," he was quoted as saying.
The Sachdeva family, hailing from Bathinda in the Indian state of Punjab, runs a lunchtime eatery, Sachdeva Sweets and Restaurant, in Surrey and is very popular among the south Asian community that has a large presence there.
The driver of the Dodge, reportedly hailing from Langley, is the only survivor of the crash and is in serious but stable condition in a hospital.
Though he is likely to face charges by the police, the report said investigators are also looking at whether he had a medical condition that might have led to the accident.
