Udupi, Apr 24: Unknown thieves gained entry into a second floor flat near Pumpwell in the city on the night of Monday April 22, and made good their escape with gold ornaments worth about nine lac rupees, and three lac rupees in cash.
The flat belongs to Shabana Ayub. Shabana was away in Bangalore since the last four days, and in her absence, her sister, Safina, who stays in Attavar, used to visit the flat every day. On Monday too, Safina had come to the flat, and left after cleaning it. The thieves who entered the flat on Monday night took away 45 sovereigns of gold ornaments and three lac rupees in cash, it is estimated. The policemen are yet to get an official complaint from the house owner about the theft.
The neigbours, who saw that the door of the flat was wide open on Tuesday morning, conveyed the information to Shabana. The policemen are trying to find how the thieves could reach the second floor, as the security guard of the apartment stated that he had locked the collapsible gate to the stairs at night.
Policemen of Kadri station visited the spot and took up investigation.
