Bantwal, Apr 22: A married woman named Mohini from Sanoorpadavu village in the taluk, who had eloped with a married man earlier this month, and had taken her eight-year old daughter with along, was found to have committed suicide in a private lodge in Mysore on Sunday April 21.
The paramour and the daughter of the deceased woman, both of whom have survived, are being treated in a hospital there. While the girl is responding to treatments, the condition of the man is critical, doctors said.
While Mohini (34), wife of Babu Poojary from Sanoorpadavu village, was found dead in the lodge room, Narendra (38) from Teerthahalli, Shimoga, and Manisha (8), who were unconscious, were admitted into K R Hospital after it was found that they had attempted suicide.
It is gathered that Narendra is married, and has a daughter. His wife, who was left behind at her parents’ home when Narendra took up job in Bantwal taluk, is pregnant now. Narendra came into contact with Mohini while working as clerk in a stone quarry near her village. He used to frequent a hotel managed by Babu Poojary every day, and there he came in contact with Mohini. During the first week of April, Babu Poojary had filed a missing complaint about his wife and daughter. He had alleged that Mohini had disappeared with about Rs 25,000 in cash, and gold ornaments. She had left home, telling the family that she would visit the office of the bidi workers.
After visiting different places for about a week, the trio reached Mysore and booked a room in a lodge near Jaganmohan Palace on April 9, it is learnt. The hotel employees said that the couple went out with the girl every day, and came back in the evening. They complained to the police after developing suspicion, after observing that the couple did not open the door of their room since noon till late night on Saturday.
Police inspector of Devaraja station, Kantaraju, said that when the door of the room was broken, the police found that Mohini had died. Narendra and Manisha, who were unconscious, were admitted into hospital. The police believe that the couple, who had spent all the money they had, would have consumed poison to escape from humiliation.
Mohini’s brother, Chandrashekhar, said that his sister seemed to have sold her gold ornaments, as the policemen have recovered a bill about having bought a Karimani chain and Taali made of artificial gold at Mysore.
