Udupi, Apr 19: Unknown thieves entered two houses located on Mallar Kote Road within the jurisdiction of Kaup police station and took away gold and silver valuables, besides cash worth lacs of rupees. The incident occurred on the night of Wednesday April 17.
The thieves entered a house located near Mallar Garody belonging to Leela where an old couple lives, and a house belonging to Mohammed Zahir, a rickshaw driver by profession, and took away their belongings.
In the house owned by Leela, the thieves broke open three cupboards, and reportedly took away four sovereigns of golden coral necklace, two bangles, three finger rings, and silver items. It is said that in total, gold ornaments weighing over 12 sovereigns, and cash amounting to Rs 15,000, were taken away by the thieves from Leela’s house.
The thieves also stole a five sovereign Karimani chain, ear lobes weighing a sovereign, golden rings, necklace, etc from the house of Mohammed Zahir at Ugranimane on Kote Road. The weight of the gold ornaments lost in this case is around nine sovereigns. Rs 33,500 in cash was also stolen, Zahir said in his complaint. The thieves, who appear to be very intelligent, threw away items made of spurious gold near the house.
The fact that the doors and windows of these houses remained intact and the family members who were sleeping inside were not alerted by any sounds, have made the concerned to believe that the thieves would have entered the houses and hid there during power cuts, and escaped after committing theft deftly, before making their way through the back door.
Kaup police circle inspector, Shivananda Walikar, Kaup station house officer, Archana H K, crime branch sub-inspector, Rajendra Nayak, finger print experts, and sniffer dogs visited the houses. The police have initiated investigation into both the thefts.
