Bird flu cases rise to 31 in Shanghai


Beijng, Apr 18 (IANS): The number of avian flu affected cases reached 31 in Shanghai, with the confirmation of a new case Wednesday, health authorities said.

An 89-year-old man surnamed Chen, tested positive for H7N9 Tuesday night at the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, reported Xinhua citing a statement from the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission.

Chen, a native of east China's Jiangsu province, was hospitalised at a hospital Tuesday. He is in stable condition, the statement said.

Nine people who had close contact with the patient have been under medical observation and have exhibited no abnormal symptoms so far, it said.
