Kasargod, Apr 13: A lady, who claimed to be a relative of the groom, entered a marriage hall at Shantipalla in Kumble, and made good her escape with 20 sovereigns of gold ornaments meant for the bride. The incident occurred on Thursday April 11.
Zulaikha, wife of Adam Kunhi from Cheral near Bayar in Paivalike panchayat, lost these ornaments. She had carefully placed the ornaments meant for the bride, in a box kept by her side at the function. A woman wearing burkha reportedly approached her then and sought the box of ornaments, as they are required to be worn by the bride once. After finding to her dismay that the woman with the box never visited the dais where the marriage rituals were going on, Zulaikha raised an alarm.
Although the guests started searching for the thief, they did not succeed. Police personnel from Kumble station also arrived on the spot and conducted investigation, besides questioning a number of people. The policemen, who have launched a hunt for the thief, have warned the people to be very careful, as a gang involved with forcibly taking away ornaments from small children, or tactfully gaining access to gold ornaments during marriage and other functions, has been active in the district.
