Mangalore: Hit-and-run - Lorry knocks down policeman on duty

Mangalore, Apr 5: A coastal security policeman was killed in an accident while on duty at Bappanadu, Mulky here in the wee hours of Friday April 5.
The deceased has been identified as Rajappa (29), from Honnali in Davangere.
At midnight, Rajappa along with two other coastal security policemen had a shift in duty and were checking passing vehicles at Bappanadu checkpost. While the other two policemen checked vehicles going towards Udupi, Rajappa had checked a vehicle moving towards Mangalore from Udupi.
At around 3 am, a lorry is said to have rammed into Rajappa and sped away.
When the other two policemen turned around to look, Rajappa had already fallen on the ground, killed on the spot. The lorry had moved too fast for them to note down the number.
Rajappa was of 2008 batch and was posted here a year ago. His first posting was in Sullia. His wife, who is a housewife, is pregnant. They had married about 10 months ago.
He was the son of Mallappa, and was the among the youngest of two brothers and two sisters.
The body was shifted to Srinivas hospital.
Mulky police have registered a case.
Last Rites
On Friday at around 3.15 pm, Rajappa's body was taken to the police commissioner’s office where a guard of honor was given.
IGP Pratap Reddy of Western Ghats, police commissioner Manish Karbikar, SP Abhishek Goel, DSP’s SP’s among others paid their last respects to the slain policeman.
The body was later handed over to the family members.
