Mangalore, Apr 2: In a tragic incident, a man whose car had killed a child in February this year, allegedly committed suicide as he was depressed over the incident.
The deceased has been identified as Valerian Rodrigues (50), whose Innova car had hit and killed a 12-year-old near Kankanady while she was crossing the road. The accident had taken place on February 23.
Even though more than a month had passed after the incident, he could not come to terms with it and was said to be in a state of depression.
It is also learnt that Valerian had recently sold off his property in Koppa, Chikmagalur and come to Mangalore. He was residing in rented house at Jayashree Gate along with his family. He then purchased a new flat in the same area. The house warming ceremony was held on Sunday March 31.
On Monday April 1, Valerian came back to the rented house saying that he wanted to sleep there. On Tuesday morning, when his children came in search of their father, they could not find him anywhere.
On searching the premises, they found his footwear near the well, which aroused suspicion that he might have committed suicide. Also, the covering on the well had been partly opened. The fire brigade and police were called, and Valerian's body was fished out.
A case has been registered in the Kankanady police station.
