Srinagar, Apr 2 (IANS): The local weather office here Tuesday dispelled reports of gusty winds or a hailstorm in the Kashmir Valley during the next two to three days that could cause damage to life and property.

Strong winds and hailstorm in south Kashmir areas damaged fruit blossoms and mustard crop Monday.

Eye-witnesses said the hailstorm led to a four-inch layer of hailstones in over a dozen villages in south Kashmir's Pulwama district.

"The worst damage was caused to fruit trees now in bloom, and mustard fields in these areas. People came out of their homes in panic after over four inches of hailstones gathered on the ground," an official of the local horticulture department said.

Police rescue parties saved five tourists in Dal Lake Monday evening after strong winds capsized their boat.

Sonam Lotus, director of the local weather office, dispelled media reports that gusty winds and hailstorms would occur in the valley during the next two days.

"We are not expecting any strong wind activity or hailstorm in the Valley at least during the next two to three days," Lotus said.
