Udupi: Attack on students – accused in judicial custody

Udupi, Mar 16: The four persons, facing charges of assaulting Hindu youth for talking with a girl, were on Friday March 15, remanded to judicial custody by the local court till March 23. Reportedly, the accused along with some others had beaten up three persons, taking umbrage at the fact that they were conversing with a girl from the other community while travelling in a private bus.

In the meanwhile, the workers of some Hindu organizations have called for Kaup bandh on Saturday March 16, in protest against the failure of the police in arresting the other culprits numbering around ten. They have requested the shopkeepers and other business establishments in the town to down their shutters for a day voluntarily to show solidarity with the victims of the above assault.

While the police claim that the above four were arrested by them, leaders of Popular Front of India (PFI) said they had arranged for the surrender of the accused. Abubakkar, president of Kaup unit of PFI, claimed that the assaulters do not belong to his organization, and that the organization had arranged for their surrender. He also said that his organization condemns the attack.
