Uproar in Kashmir assembly over Pakistan resolution

Jammu, Mar 16 (IANS): The Jammu and Kashmir assembly witnessed an uproar Saturday over calls to denounce Pakistan parliament's support to Afzal Guru.

The demand to pass a resolution against Pakistan was made by the members of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) and Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP).

Speaker Mubarak Gul, however, did not entertain the plea, saying the matter has already been discussed and debated by the Indian parliament, hence the state Assembly need not pass such resolution.

Agitated members of the BJP and JKNPP staged a walk out.

JKNPP legislature party leader Harsh Dev Singh criticised the government's attitude on the issue.

He said the Omar Abdullah government was adopting "double standards" as the government discussed Afzal Guru's hanging but denied the permission to pass a resolution against Pakistan in national interest.

India had hit back at Pakistan Friday after it denounced Afzal Guru's execution a day earlier, with parliament passing a resolution against Islamabad and the government axing a bilateral hockey series.

Rejecting the interfere by Pakistan in India's internal affairs, parliament said it should "desist from acts of support for extremists and terrorists".
