Udupi: Three students beaten up for talking to girl in bus

Udupi, Mar 13: Three young men who were talking to a girl from another community in a bus were allegedly assaulted by a group of people belonging to a certain community at Kaup here on Wednesday March 13 evening.
Following the incident, members of various Hindu organizations condemned the assault and gheraoed Kaup police station.
It is said that two youths, identified as Srinath (23) and Rajesh (24) residents of Katipalla, Mangalore, along with another youth were beaten up by the group. The youths, students of a college in Mangalore, were returning to Mangalore from Manipal by bus when the incident took place.
During the bus journey, the youths were reportedly talking to a girl from another community. Noticing this, a youth who was in the same bus informed members of the local community outfits.
It is said that when the bus reached Kaup, the members of the outfits got into the bus and took the three youths to task. An argument broke out between the two groups. Meanwhile, two more people came by bike and stopped the bus when it reached Shanti Niketan Educational Institute, and forced the three persons out of the bus and assaulted them, said eyewitnesses.
However, sources said that as the victims had no clear information about the assaulters, they were unable to file a proper complaint with the police.
Hindu organizations gherao police station
Soon after the incident, members of local Hindu organizations came in support of the victims and gheraoed Kaup police station. They demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and threatened to intensify their protest if action was not taken promptly. They also shouted slogans against the police.
Kaup police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
