New York, March 7 (IANS/EFE): An online auction of 125 works by Andy Warhol, the father of Pop Art, brought in nearly $2.3 million, including commissions, for the Warhol Foundation, which will use the funds for scholarships.

The 124 auction lots included paintings, drawings, photographs and prints by Warhol (1928-87).

The auction, which started Feb 26 and ended Tuesday, drew a tremendous response from art lovers and collectors because of the wide variety of high-quality works available for purchase.

The biggest bid - $112,500 with commission - was made for "I Love Your Kiss Forever Forever", a colorful print of the lips of actress Marilyn Monroe, one of Warhol's muses and an American cultural icon.

Warhol did the Monroe print on five different occasions and using different colours.

Photographs drew the least interest from collectors, as happened in the Warhol Foundation's auction last November.

The foundation announced plans last September to slowly sell off its vast collection of 20,000 works to raise money for art scholarships.

The first disposition of works was made at a traditional auction Nov 12 at Christie's that raised $17 million.

The record price for a Warhol work was achieved in New York in 2007, when $71.7 million was paid for "Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car I)" from 1963 at Christie's.
