Madikeri, Mar 1: A student from Puttur died in a tragic car accident at Mandalpatti here on Wednesday February 27 night.
The deceased has been identified as Shivananda Nayak (23), son of Nagesh Nayak, a bidi contractor in Puttur. Shivananda was a BSW student of Philomena College, Puttur.
It is said that after taking part in the college annual day celebrations, Shivananda along with his friends Deekshith, Sandeep, Pratap and Shivaprasad left for Madikeri by car.
After reaching Madikeri, they went to Mandalpatti tourist spot, which is about 22 km from the town. They planned to spend the night on the hill.
Sources said that Shivananda went back to his car which was parked a short distance away to get some things. The car suddenly moved backwards and rolled off the hill, with Shivananda inside.
Another source said that Shivananda was driving the car towards their guest house when he lost control and rolled off a cliff.
Madikeri rural police SI Srikanth and other police officials visited the spot and registered a case.
It is learnt that Shivananda was an accused in a theft case reported at a jewellery story in Karkala last year. He was even arrested and released on bail later. The case is in Udupi sessions court, and it is said that Shivananda feared that the verdict may go against him, and may have hence committed suicide.
