Screening is essential to avoid complication of the silent disease of osteoporosis - Expert

Ajman, Feb 27: The department of Diagnostic Imaging, GMC Hospital, Ajman and Gulf Medical University hosted the National Conference on Updates in Radiology at GMU campus recently.
 
Leading Specialists delivered lectures on various topics related to radiology. Prof Ahmed El Serafi spoke about Osteoporosis and his recommendation is that screening is essential to avoid complication of the silent disease of Osteoporosis and it is the new trend to scan the spine and both hip regions, not the wrist joint unless it is not possible to scan such regions.

Dr Adel El Qaysi discussed about the Fetal Echo Cardiography. His conclusion is that basic 4 chamber view of the heart is essential to detect many cardiac anomalies and heart screening can be started as early as the first trimester with the skill and expertise of the examiner being an important part for proper diagnosis.
 
“Ultrasonography can be the first imaging modality in examining the bowel in different clinical situations and it is being under-utilized in that aspect”, said Dr Ravi Devadas Kadasne who spoke on Ultrasonography of Bowel.
 
Dr Santana Natarajan said that adequate safety measures need to be implemented in Dental Radiography. She spoke about the radiation protection in Dental Radiology.
 
“3D CT images and panoramic x-ray have an essential role in guiding Maxillo Facial surgeons for proper surgical treatment in trauma cases”, said Prof Mohamed Said Hamed during his lecture on the ‘Role of X-Ray in Maxillo Facial Trauma’.
 
Dr Vilas Kanikdaley spoke on Spinal Trauma Imaging and his conclusion was MRI is the best imaging modality for evaluation of spinal trauma cases.
 
Dr Tarek Fawzy, Head department of Diagnostic Imaging, GMC Hospital Ajman chaired the conference. He announced that the department will be hosting a major conference on Radiology in October, 2013.
 
Over 100 delegates attended the conference which was accredited by the Ministry of Health for 6 CME hrs.
