New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI): A 25-year-old woman was shot dead allegedly by a "drunk" man in a busy area in south Delhi tonight when she objected to his misbehaviour, an incident that again raised questions on women's security in the Capital less than three months after the brutal gangrape case.
Police said the incident took place when the victim identified as Pooja was with with her husband Mohan Prasad on the Ring Road in Sarai Kale Khan close to the busy Inter State Bus Terminal(ISBT) and near Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station. The victim was a resident of Bhajanpura in Outer Delhi.
A senior police officer said the assailant, who was identified as Munshi Yadav from Bihar, has been arrested.
Police said the victim and the assailant knew each other and the incident appeared to be a case of personal enmity.
"He was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. He misbehaved with the woman and she objected to it. Enraged, he opened fire at her. She died on the spot," the officer said.
Eyewitnesses said the assailant was caught by passersby and handed over to police. There was a police post about 100 metres near the scene of the crime, they said, adding that a PCR van arrived in about five to ten minutes. The incident is reported to have occurred around 8 pm.
One eyewitness identified as Rakesh Kumar said he heard the woman and the assailant had arguments over some issue.
Kumar said the attacker who was caught after being chased while trying to escape had a countrymade pistol. "We found some bullets from his pocket," he added.
