'Shinde expressed regret, not apology for Hindu terror remark'

New Delhi, Feb 24 (PTI): As dust settles on the 'Hindu terror' issue, government has said Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde had not apologised for his controversial remarks but only expressed regret, which was accepted by BJP.

"Well, it is regret. That is the word that has been used. I cannot change the language once it is used," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath told Karan Thapar on 'Devil's Advocate' programme on CNN-IBN.

He was responding to questions on whether Shinde had expressed regret or tendered an apology for his remark made at a Congress meet in Jaipur that BJP was running camps for training Hindu terrorists.

Nath said while Shinde had used the word BJP, he has clarified that he did not mean any political organisation.

"If it has inadvertently or advertently been construed to mean that, he said I express regret," Nath said.

He also sought to make a distinction between Shinde's remarks and similar comments made by P Chidambaram during his tenure as Home Minister.

"The difference was Shinde used the word BJP and Mr Chidambaram had not used the word BJP," he said.

The Minister admitted that Shinde's statement of regret was discussed at meetings he and Shinde had with the BJP leadership.

"There was a discussion and some text was worked out. Some text was discussed (with BJP). They said this was enough... they said he should say this. This was not a test like putting a comma and a fullstop," Nath said, describing the meetings with the BJP leaders.

He said the matter was discussed with the BJP leaders to avoid complications later.
"We did not want a statement where they said this is not that. They want something and the only way to cut it short was to discuss it and sort it out," Nath said. Nath said Shinde did not deny the remarks he had made at the Jaipur meeting and had only clarified that he did not mean it.

The Home Minister always had the intention to clarify his remarks and a time was chosen to issue a statement, he said.

"So what it took 30 days? It happened. What heavens have fallen if it has taken 30 days? It has to the the BJP's point not your point ... The question is the matter is over on this subject and Parliament is functioning without this being an issue," Nath said.

On Congress spokesman P C Chacko's remark that Shinde was not factually incorrect, he said it was his colleague's "own opinion".

Nath maintained that the entire episode had not diminished Shinde's standing in the Union Cabinet. "Certainly not. Why should it? These things happen to all of us," he said.

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister shot down the Left parties demand for removal of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien in connection with the Suryanelli rape case in which he has already been exonerated by the apex court.

"I am not going to accept it. If you want to boycott, it is your House. It is not my House."
He also dismissed suggestions that Kurien should recuse from presiding over the House when it considers a Bill to strengthen anti-rape laws. "If he is in the chair, he will preside. Why not? This is not an issue of ethics and propriety," he said.

Nath said he has offered any kind of probe into the allegations of kickbacks in the acquisition of helicopters for VVIPs and the matter would be discussed in Parliament.

On stronger anti-rape laws, he said every political party was attaching highest importance to this issue and did not want the matter to be referred to a Standing Committee.

"I think all political parties should arrive at a consensus that this should not go to any committee. We should pass this Bill as soon as possible," Nath said.

WOW!!! such a weak thinking!!! You have no idea about the value of time! thank god you are not the PM, otherwise the state would have been doomed by now!!! 48hours is more than enough to take necessary precautions... Using the resources at your disposal would certainly help in preventing the attack... I still cant believe what you have just said! you get the info before 48hours and you say there is nothing you can do!!! WOW!!!

@Suraj R, Bangalore, I guess you have not understood. Let me make it very simple. Assume you are the CM of Karnataka and you get a mail from Delhi saying that Bangalore is going to be bombed in the next 48 hours. Do you have enough police, security, intelligence or brains to protect entire Bangalore?

I dont understand why did you include my name!!!

Shameless act yes, but by the terrorists!!!

Anyway, just compare the people who have been saved (people in the flight) and the deaths in the Parliament attack. Saving the people's life is more important than taking it! I dont know, if you think the same way or not... But, one more question is, if we hadn't let those 3 terrorists go, all the people in that plane would have died for sure and do you really think the terrorists would stop their activities. Coz terrorists have hijacked the plane without the help of those 3 terrorists.... So yes, I really think the decision to save those innocent people in that flight was humane...

We don’t need apology or regret from person like Shinde. People of his own constituency will teach him the Principle, Origin and route cause of terrorism. This is nothing but when Helicopter wings are clipped land mines are activated to divert the scam issues. When IM themselves claimed responsibility for Hyderabad Bomb Blasts, foul mouthed Shinde can dare to utter single word against IM Religion or Community? Wait for another few days, same UPA or likely minded Political Party including few supporting NGOs’ and Vedike will explain the “Theory of Terrorism followed by Bomb Blast - Why it is happening” rather than supporting to find out who done that?

When govt prioritizes religions above education, this is bound to happen.
What is the root cause of terrorism – is it illiteracy and a good religion with wrong people ?
What is the root cause of counter terrorism – Is it govt failure to curb cross border terrorism ?.
Why people rage religious war for their enforced default religions , while Budhism/jainism are the authentic Indian religions ?
True patriots consider country above their beliefs . True believer values humanity more than anything else .

Those who had been demanding apology from Shinde can still rejoice because if they had understood the reason and meaning of his earlier statement would not have demanded an apology at all.Who cares if apology or regret. Those making noise need not understand the difference either.

This SILENT MODE PM does not have any shame. He should resign immediately.

After every bomb blast he goes to venue and says - "We regret, unfortunate, 2 lakhs compensation, free medical treatment, it is cowards job, we will take action, our govt is committed to combat terror, request to maintain peace, no need to worry, our country is safe, security force is on task, we will prevent such things in future etc blah.. blah..".

He has been telling this from last 9 years. Most of the attacks had prior clues. None of them his govt could prevent. He is just playing with lives of people. Shameless PM. The title UNDER-ACHIEVER and TRAGIC-FIGURE best suits him. People of US are not fools in awarding such titles to him.

We think "ಶಿಂದೆ ಹಂದಿಗೆ ಸಮ". His regret or apology does not matter for us.

WE ARE MOST PEACEFUL COMMUNITY ON THE WORLD. WHOLE WORLD KNOWS WHAT ARE HINDUS FOR. I AM VERY PROUD TO BE BORN IN HINDU.

Shinde could not prevent HYD attack though he had prior information. This shows what kind of person he is and his capabilities. Because of this kind of statements he is pleasing madam and continuing in office. He is responsible for 18 innocents death.

Winston Churchil, then Prime Minister of UK argued in their parliament on proceedings about granting freedom to India... He was against granting freedom to India. He argued "Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues, freebooter, all Indian leaders will be of low caliber and men of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts..They will fight amongst themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabbles. A day would come when even air and water would be taxed in India".

He wrote and said the above thing 64 years ago and we Indians have worked very hard to prove him right...Monkeys (our politicians) dont know the value of Manikya (democracy and freedom)

There is no point in blowing this issue out of propotion. Its usual congressmens habit at times to create such controversies & be in the good books of their vote bank. All they want is to make their chunk of votebank happy including the one's across the border who sent them congratulatery message the next day for the speech and some within our borders staying in India or abroad who will digest their food very nicely when their partymen talk like this and then act like Pseudo Sickular. At the end of it Chopper Scam is flowing in the drains thanks to Bomb Blasts, Finally another Naatak of Regretting it. This BjP also does not have any oher work, instead of countering Govt on Corruption or slow growth rate issues , instead of havinjg any alternative plans for the welfare of the nation, they are still dreaming that they can still form the Govt in the name of Lord Rama...Is desh ka kuch honewala nahi.

Throught the media, may it be common man or the leader, we see them condemning the ruling party.
No one is condemning opening the one who did the blast.
Why? Cant we criticize them openly? Condemn them, check how those culprits we brougth up, who were their parents, neighbourhood etc. Who influenced them to get into such groups. Why dont they do it? Expose them, depose them
