Mangalore University honorary doctorates for Chandrashekar Kambar, Kadri Gopalnath

Mangalore, Feb 21: Mangalore University will confer honorary doctorates on three eminent persons during its 31st convocation ceremony to be held on Saturday February 23 at Mangala Gangotri.
Addressing a press meet held at University College, Hampankatta here on Thursday February 21, University vice-chancellor Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy said that like last year, even this time three achievers had been selected for the honour.
The awardees are Jnanpith award winner, poet-playwright-folklorist Dr Chandrashekar Kambar, senior hockey player A B Subayya from Coorg and prominent saxophonist Dr Kadri Gopalnath. "These names were selected and sent to the governor, who has given his approval," he said.
This year, the university will grant doctorates to 84 people, MPhil to seven, gold medals to 36, cash prize to 55, and ranks to 60 students.
Out of the total 30,384 who students appeared for the 2011-12 exams, 18,969 cleared. The University has spent Rs 2,36,880 on gold medals, out of which there is a shortage of Rs 43,607 and the rest of the money has been donated by sponsors. Prof Murthy said that the remaining amount will be borne by him.
About the Awardees
Dr Chandrashekar Kambara
Prominent playwright and poet Dr Chandrashekar Kambara was born in Belgaum in 1937. He obtained doctorate degree from Karnataka University and later continued his studies at Chicago University. He served as a professor for 20 years in Bangalore University and was also the vice-chancellor of Hampi Kannada University. He was awarded the Jnanpith in 2011.
Dr Kadri Gopalnath
He was born in 1949 in Mangalore and is among the prominent saxophonists in the country. He was conferred the Padmashree in 2004, honorary doctorate from Bangalore University in 2004, Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 1998, and has also received Tamil Nadu's coveted 'Kalaimaamani' award.
Dr Gopalnath is also the recipient of several titles like ‘Saxophone Samrat’, ‘Gaanakalashree’, ‘Naada Kalaanidi’, and ‘Sangeetha Vadya Ratna’.
A B Subayya
Senior hockey player A B Subayya was born in Madikeri. He was conferred the Arjuna Award in 1997 and Ekalavya award in 2003. He has played around 285 international hockey matches between 1988 to 1998 as part of the Indian hockey team.
