Udupi: Two awarded 10 years in jail for snatching gold worth over Rs 5 lac

Udupi, Feb 17: The district court has awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment to two persons in connection with a robbery that took place on September 24, 2009.
The culprits are Ramesh Poojary (37) of Anugriha Nilaya, Gundibail, Shivalli village, Udupi and Ravi Poojary(38), Kunjoor, Yellur village, Udupi. A penalty of Rs 5000 has also been imposed on them.
The third accused in the case, Girish Poojary was acquitted.
According to the police complaint registered on September 24, 2009 K Ramachandra and with his wife Harinakshi were on their way by bike to attend a programme at Teacher’s Co-operative Society, Udupi. While returning home at around 7.30 pm, near Hudco Colony close to Doddanna Gudde Police Quarters, the strangers followed the couple on bike and pulled the gold chain off Harinakshi and also snatched her vanity bag and fled from the scene despite resistance from Harinakshi.
The bag contained gold ornaments worth Rs 5,34,000 and a mobile phone.
Based on the complaint, Udupi circle inspector Girish and his team arrested three persons in connection with the case and recovered the valuables.
Judge Narendra Kumar B Gunaki of district court, Udupi announced the verdict on February 15.
T S Jithori, public prosecutor, Udupi fought the case on behalf of the couple.
