Mangalore: New twist to Yeyyadi accident - police say young doctors were not drunk

Mangalore, Feb 18: In a twist to the accident case at Yeyyadi that took the lives of two youths, the police now claim that the young doctors whose car caused the accident were not under the influence of alcohol.
The accident occured at 12.30 am on Sunday February 17. Two young doctors, a boy and a girl who were allegedly in a drunken stupor, rammed their car into Yogish and Jayaprakash at Yeyyadi, killing them both.
However, Kavoor police now claim that the youngsters were not drunk, and that it was in fact the deceased persons who were on the wrong side of the road.
A police personnel told Daijiworld that the boy, who has been identified as Shivanand Shetty of Udupi, was on his way to drop the girl at Konchadi, and was on the right side of the road.
The identity of the girl has not been revealed.
Though initial reports stated that the two had escaped from the spot, it was later learnt that Shivanand was admitted to a hospital in the city.
Shivanand Shetty has been released on bail.

Mangalore, Feb 17: In a shocking incident, two persons were killed in the early hours of Sunday February 17 after their two-wheeler was hit by a car driven by young doctors, who were allegedly drunk.
The accident occured near Yeyyadi petrol bunk at around 12.30 am.
The deceased have been identified as Yogish (27) and Jayaprakash (23), both electricians by profession.
Yogish was the son of Chandrahas and Sunitha of Moodushedde, while Jayaprakash was the son of Somappa Nayak and Neelamma of Veerakamba, Kalladka.
It is said that the two young doctors, a girl and a boy whose identities are yet to be established, were driving in a drunken stupor. The Chevrolet car (MH 04 DW 1237), which was at a high speed, went out of control and rammed into several spots along the road before dashing into the two-wheeler ridden by Yogish and Jayaprakash near Yeyyadi petrol bunk.
The impact of the accident was such that both Yogish and Jayaprakash were flung far off. The vehicles skid for a few metres before coming to a stop. The car also dashed into the compound wall of a school nearby.
Sadly, as it was late night, Yogish and Jayaprakash lay bleeding heavily on the road till help came at around 2.30 am, which resulted in their death.
They had returned after some work at Suratkal. Jayaprakash stopped the bike near the petrol bunk to drop Yogish, when the accident occured.
It was later learnt that the youth who was driving the car was admitted to a hospital in the city, while the girl escaped with minor injuries.
Kavoor police have registered a case and seized the car.
