More needs to be done for safety of women: Shinde

New Delhi, Feb 16 (IANS): Recalling the gruesome gang-rape in the national capital on Dec 16 and calling it a "shameless act", Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that much more still remained to be done to provide safety to women.

The home minister was speaking on the occasion of the 66th Raising Day of Delhi Police at Kingsway Camp in north Delhi. "We need combined efforts to ensure that women are secure," Shinde said.

He also had a word of appreciation for Delhi Police, who cracked the gang-rape case in just 24 hours.

On Dec 16, 2012, a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern was brutally assaulted and gang-raped by six men in a moving bus. She sustained grievous injuries, and was treated first at Sardarjung Hospital and then in Singapore. She succumbed to her injuries Dec 29, 2012.
