Udupi, Feb 8: The power-starved Karnataka heaved a sigh of relief after the second unit of Padubidri-based Udupi Power Corporation Ltd (UPCL) began generating power on Thursday February 7.
The first unit had begun generation the previous day. The consumers of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (Mescom) are happier, as they were the worst affected ones since UPCL suspended power generation on January 25, citing non-payment of dues by electricity supply companies, and shortage of imported coal.
Both the units have a capacity to generate 600 mw power each. Mescom managing director, Sumanth, said that the situation in the region will improve with power contribution from UPCL.
The people of the Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga, Udupi, and Chikmagalur districts located under Mescom, who suffered hours of power cuts every day since the last several days, now can hope for a far better power situation.
