Udupi, Feb 4: The call given by Brahmavar Taluk Action Committee to shut down business and other establishments on Sunday February 3 as a mark of protest against the delay in carving out separate Brahmavar taluk from Udupi taluk got weak response.
The merchants closed their establishments for some time, while hotels operated normally. As a majority of shops and offices remain closed even otherwise on Sundays, the people did not face problems.
Some people were in attendance at a protest held at Brahmavar bus stand by the committee under the leadership of its president, Barkur Satish Poojary, for a few minutes. Office bearers of the committee like Jayanti Vasudev, Uday Kumar Brahmavar, and leaders of some organizations were present.
Poojary said that from past 35 years various governments have assured of declaring Brahmavar as a taluk, but nothing has been done so far.
He further said that the committee will be undertaking agitation in the form of fast unto death, demanding creation of Brahmavar taluk. He said that the fast will continue till a concrete assurance about according taluk status to Brahmavar comes forth from the government.
