Mangalore: Protesters demand airport to be named after Rani Abbakka

Mangalore, Jan 30: Veera Rani Abbakka celebration committee on Wednesday January 30 protested in front of the DC office demanding Bajpe international airport to be named after freedom fighter Rani Abbakka.

Speaking during the protest, former MLA Jayaram Shetty said, "the great Abbakka was the first freedom fighter who fought against Portuguese in 1550, but the sad part is our historians nor the government has given any importance to her due to which people have forgotten her. Hence we demand the government to recognize her contribution".

 

With an aim to celebrate the festival of Veera Rani Abbakka, a celebration committee was formed in the year 1997. "We have sent appeals to the government to name railway station, port or airport to named after her but so far we have not received any positive response from them. Hence at the time of celebrating 10th festival of Rani Abbakka, we have decided to intensify the protest demanding to name the international airport after her", said Shetty.

Sushma Janardhan Poojary, former zilla panchayat president in her address said, "Abbakka is a proud symbol of women. It is our duty to make her immortal and give proper respect to her. In this regard we have united here irrespective of caste, creed, sex. This shows that we have united for giving an apt status to Abbakka considering it as a national security issue. Hence we demand the government to accept our proposal soon or else the women of coastal districts will intensify their protest", she added.

Dinakar Ullal, Abbakka celebration committee president; Hamee Kandak, JDS leader; Ravindra Shetty, Yogesh Shetty Jeppu of Tulunadu Rakshana Vedike, Vijaylaxmi Shetty, CPI leader Krishnappa Salian among others were present.

    With due respect to the organisers of the dharana,I wish to point out that there is no special reason to name the airport after Rani Abbakka as it has no relevence.There is lot of oppertunity to name the places after Rani Abbakka.It would be more appropriate to name the Mangalore Intl airport after Late Sri Ullal Srinivas Mallya MP who was instrumental in starting the airport in Mangalore due his forsightednes.Because of immense contributions to erstwhile DK dist he is known as father of DK dist.None of MPs from here have done so much to the dist,not even 5% of his achievments.George Fernandes though he was never contested from here and won is an exception.Konkan railway line was his gift to us.Late Mallya as well George Fernandes though belong to diverse political thoughts but their committment for the country was same.Both were simple,humble with a firm commitment for the cause. Both were undergraduates.Unlike todays politicians both were simple in dress code,Mr.Mally and GF never found in khadak super white khadi like we see today in our politicians.Mr.Mallyas contributions to DK dist can be listed as below:
    1.Mangalore town hall
    2.Mangalore Airport
    3.Mngalore Radio station,
    4.Bridge across river Nethravathi
    5.Cercuit house Mangalore
    6.Mangalore Bombay NH
    7.Hassan Mangalore Railway line
    8.Bangalore/Mangalore NH
    9.KREC,Suratkal(Now NITK)
    10.Mangalore Port(NMPT)
    So what better name we can find for Mangalore Airport other than Ullal Srinivas Mallya International Airpoty.That will be befitting tribute to this great visionery and Yugapurush.

    1st change your house names to Rani Abbakka, or name your daughter as Rani Abbakka, before trying to change the name of airport.
