Mangalore, Jan 29: New Mangalore Port during the current financial year 2012-13 (as on date) has crossed 30 million tonnes of traffic by handling 30.08 million tonnes as against 26.6 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year with a growth rate of 13.8%.
The Port has also achieved the target of 30 million tonnes fixed by the Ministry for the year 2012-13(upto January 2013). The container traffic also registered a steady growth by handling 37,759 TEUs (as on date) registering 3.75% growth. The increased growth in the handling of coal, POL crude and products by MRPL, maize, containterised cargoes, etc. has contributed to the upward growth in traffic.
Dr P Tamilvanan, chairman while expressing happiness over the achievement in terms of traffic has stated that the Port could reach this stage inspite of the sudden shortfall to the tune of 8 million tonnes of iron ore traffic due to mining ban. "Thanks to the marketing efforts coupled with infrastructure addition and sincere cooperation by the officers, employees, cargo handling workers, trade unions and the Port Users which otherwise could not have achieved this goal," he said.
