Mangalore , Jan 27:  A cargo ship sunk in the Arabian Sea on its way back from Lakshadweep to Mangalore on Saturday January 26. All 5 people on board, among them one Mangalorean and four Gujaratis, were rescued.

The ship was completely submerged in water, causing an estimated loss of Rs 35 lac.

Ship captain Abdul Rehman (48) of Krishnapur, and Husain Ibrahim (44), Mohammed Ibrahim (25), Sulthan Kareem (26) and Saleem Kasim (37) from Gujarat, were rescued.

It is also learnt that the ship, ‘Mathin’, belonging to Abdul Aziz Bengre, and had off-loaded cement, limestone and food at Kiltan Island and had started to Mangalore from Lakshadweep at 4 am on Saturday.

About 12 km away from Kiltan Island, water entered into the engine of the ship all of a sudden. Immediately the officers communicated the message to a nearby tower. Government vessels and vessels of Al Mathuris swung into action and rescued the stranded crew at around 11 am and brought them to safety.

The ship sunk in completely causing an estimated loss of Rs 35 lac, stated Abdul Aziz Bengre in his complaint.
