Mangalore, Jan 18: The two-day national seminar on ‘Emerging Trends in Biological Sciences’, organized by department of botany, zoology and microbiology of St Agnes college was inaugurated at the conference hall, Sophia block on Friday January 18 at 9.30 am.
The seminar was sponsored by the department of biotechnology, ministry of science and technology under star college scheme.
Dr George V Thomas, director, CPCRI, Kasargod was the chief guest. Dr Sr M Prem D’Souza AC, prinicpal, presided over the inaugural function. Dr Noeline J Pinto, organizing secretary and Dr Geetha Nazareth, HOD of chemistry, PG studies St Agnes College, were also present on the dais.
The seminar was formally inaugurated by lighting of the auspicious lamp by the dignitaries present on the dais. A souvenir was also released on the occasion.
“Science and research needs to be highly focused for overall development of the country. Biodiversity is the important aspect and strength of the nation. India has its own milestone in the field of biotechnology”, said Dr Thomas.
In her presidential address, Dr D’Souza said, “The national resources of our country are depleting. It the present scenario it is not possible to save our earth, but it is our utmost duty to protect the earth for the future generation. It is our major responsibility to learn to love and conserve all forms of life."
She urged the students to not just read, learn and leave it aside. Students should not just stick to text books and labs, but should research and studied, she said.
Delegates and students from different parts of the country will take part in the two-day seminar programme.
