Beijing, Jan. Jan 15 (IANS): At least nine people were killed and 28 injured in an accident involving carbon monoxide poisoning at a gold mine in China's Jilin province Tuesday morning, authorities said.
A total of 51 miners were working underground when a fire broke out around 4 a.m. inside the Laojinchang gold mine in Huadian city. It led to a high density of carbon monoxide, Xinhua reported, citing the city's publicity department.
Thirteen people escaped or were lifted out of the mine, with an annual production capacity of 46,500 tonnes, shortly after the accident while one miner was pulled out later unhurt.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.
