India Denies Breaching Truce along LoC

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IANS): India denied Tuesday it had broken the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir and said it was committed to the sanctity of the Line of Control (LoC).

The external affairs ministry also urged Pakistan "to ensure that the sanctity of LoC is maintained".

"We deny Indian troops violated the ceasefire," a ministry spokesman said, a day after Pakistan lodged a strong protest over what it alleged was a breach by New Delhi of the truce along the LoC.

"India is committed to the sanctity of LoC in Jammu and Kashmir," he said, calling it the most important part of the India-Pakistan confidence-building measures.

He said the director generals of military operation of India and Pakistan were in touch over the firing along the LoC, which divides Kashmir between the two countries.

Pakistan claims that Indian firing in one of the sectors wounded two Pakistani soldiers, one of whom died.

The Indian spokesman said: "(We) call upon Pakistan to ensure the sanctity of LoC ... and such incidents of unprovoked firing do not recur."
