Udupi, Jan 8: Bus drivers are often criticized for their reckless and rash driving which have resulted in a number of accidents, but here is an alert driver whose presence of mind perhaps saved many lives.
The bus he was driving had a sudden break failure near Pangala bridge on national highway 66, but fortunately, thanks to his quick action, the damage was minimum and the passengers escaped with minor injuries.
The incident occurred in the afternoon of Monday January 7.
The private bus was moving from Kaup to Udupi with a good number of passengers. As the bus reached Pangala bridge, its break failed. The alert driver, whose identity is not known, in a bid to save the lives of the passengers, put his own life at risk and dashed the bus into the rear side of a lorry moving ahead.
Immediately, the lorry driver moved his vehicle to the side of the national highway and the bus too moved on.
It is said that if the driver had lost control over the bus and hit the bridge, the bus would have fallen into the gorge and the minor mishap would have turned into a major tragedy.
A few passengers sustained minor injuries and were admitted in a private hospital in Udupi.
Kaup police inspector Rajendra Nayak rushed to the spot. A case has been registered and investigation is on.
