Mangalore: Auto Rickshaw Drivers Demand ‘Fare’ Hike

Mangalore, Dec 4: The auto rickshaw drivers under the banner of their unions like Mangalore City Auto Rickshaw Drivers’ Union, Federation of Karnataka Auto Drivers Unions, DK District Committee, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Auto Rickshaw Drivers Wing, Motor and General Mazdoor Union demonstrated in front of the DC office here on Monday November 3 demanding lawful auto fare hike.
 
Addressing the gathering, L T Suvarna of Federation of Karnataka Auto Drivers Unions DK District Committee said that the auto drivers are demanding their fare hike on the backdrop of increasing in fuel price and that of spare parts as well.

 He said that the district administration has the authority of regularizing the revised price, but failing to act on its part despite submitting repetitive appeal by the unions.
 
Shekar of Mangalore City Auto Rickshaw Drivers’ Union DK, Jayaprakash Shetty of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike Autorickshaw Drivers Wing, Umesh Shetty of Motor and General Mazdoor Union among others were present.
 
There are more than 14000 autos operating in the district. Several auto drivers took part in the demonstration as mark of their consent with the demand.

    There is nothing wrong in demanding an increase auto and taxi fares. This was inevitable because of fuel price hike. We don’t have any other alternative but to accept this. The only thing we can do is, we can plan our budget according to this fare hike.     Auto drivers are demanding double the fare after 9.30 PM. Is it justifiable ? They demand very high fare from Railway station, KSRTC depot and to go to houses in the interior. They also do not observe traffic rules. Their demand for increase in fares is not fair.

    The rickshaw drivers used to be more honest than the ones in Bangalore,but that is changing rapidly."No change","ashte aagtade",etc are common excuses.I have even experienced when rick drivers unnecessarily try to take the longer route.People should not give in to their demands.

    Compared to other major cities in India Mangalore has the highest auto fares. Just because a few Middle East people dont bother about it, every poor citizen is made to pay exhorbitent rates in Mangalore. Why should they be given an increase when even Bombay has lower rates? Added to this, they follow unscrupulus practices of tampering with meters, refusing to ply short distance, etc. If they cannot affort let them stop driving auto rickshaws and start some other profession. In any case the road is filled with autos and every corner is taken by such vehicles and for parking.
    No way RTO or any other authority should give a head to their demand.

    Their demand is justified. They should get a raise. I would say the Mangalorean Rickshaw Driver are more honest than the drivers from Bangalore. Their demand should be responded immediately. I always use the rickshaw facility in Mangalore which are clean and hygiene.

    Already Auto People have Tempered Their Meter.If one has traveled they will come to know ,Different Auto Different Rate for the same Distance & No habit of giving back exact change.

    fare metres should be made compulsory and excess charging should be dealt with seriously. Which I think that the dist administration will never implement till the world ends.

    The protest seems to be for a authentic reason.

    On the contrary, in Mangalore Upon my short visits I have seen the auto driving masters. The circles and round abouts are only for other vehicles and not for auto Heros.

    There was a auto ahead of my vehicle in a recent visit to Mangalore. Near Kadri Abhinandan circle, I could just save myself from a vigorou mishap from a auto hero as he with no signs turned his auto on my face and started starring me at with a awful anger mood with a idiotic question to me "Dane kann tojuja tirguna ?"..so dim-witted spirit I say.
