Mangalore: 45 Singers Get Ready for Wilfy Rebimbus Memorial Contest

Mangalore, Nov 23: The countdown has already begun and preparations are in full swing at Jeppu Church grounds for the grand finale of Wilfy Rebimbus Memorial Inter-parish Contest, with not only the participants enthusiastically practicing for the event but also the organizing committee trying to put their best efforts to have the best show on Sunday November 25 evening.
The grand finale of the inter-parish singing competition in memory of Wilfy Rebimbus will be held at 5.30 pm on Sunday at Jeppu Church grounds. All the 45 contestants will perform songs from the compositions of legend Wilfy Rebimbus. There will be a wide range of entertainment from the parishioners.
The qualifying round was held earlier this month and the parishes qualified for the grand finale are Bejai, Bondel, Cascia, Cordel, Derebail, Milagres, Puttur, Shirva, Urwa, Vamanjoor and Valencia. The contest promises to be a tough battle between eleven parishes of the diocese with rendition of most of Wilfy’s best songs.
The compere for the evening will be Cyril Gregory Sequeira, popularly known as CGS Taccode. A well-known writer in Konkani who has written several stories, poems and humorous works for the past forty years. His column “Fugetyo” in Raknno weekly was very familiar among the Konkani people. He has published more than 25 books. He is a close associate of the Rebimbus family.
The eminent judges for the finals are
Francis Richard D’Souza
Francis Richard D’souza, well known by friends as Pinchu is from Ruzai parish. He is known to Wilfy Rebimbus from 1968, when he acted in Wilfy’s play Bebdyache Dhu. Francis has written 5 dramas, enacted in more than 100 dramas. He is also a good singer. He has been actively involved in the church choir in Kuwait. From the last 50 years he has dedicatedly been a part of the choir. He was the judge at the first Gulf Voice of Mangalore, preliminary rounds at Kuwait.
Fr Denis D’Sa
Currently the administrator, Father Muller Medical College, College of Nursing, College of Allied Health Sciences And School of Nursing. A well known talented priest in the city. He has talents for singing, oratory and directing music. He has produced and directed many Religious CDs. To mention a few Mog Kor Peleacho; Kalliz Gaitha; Prakaas (Konkani Devotional songs). Has conducted more than 300 Seminars on Media Education, Communication, Value education, Art and Culture, Inter-religious dialogue for High school & College students, Youth & Adults. Recently he had been as one of the juries for the Gulf Voice of Mangalore finals.
Dr Prashanth Raj
A renowned Hindustani vocal singer. He has sung in many Konkani, Hindi and Kannada Song Albums. Co - Produced one Konkani Hymns Album "Thujya Ghara". Done a play back singing for Konkani Movie 'Padri'. Performed in many shows abroad. He had been a Judge for semi finals singing event of Gulf Voice of Mangalore, held in Dubai. At present practicing Medicine at Vamanjoor, Mangalore
Speaking to daijiworld, Fr Nelson D’Almedia, parish priest of Jeppu said, “The judgment will be based on the day’s performance of the singer and purely on their singing and performance. We have selected the best of the best judges who have been associated with Konkani music and Wilfy Rebimbus. Their experience in the music field is tremendous and surely the best singer and performer of the day will grab the title. We wish all the finalists every best in the grand finale.”
