Mangalore, Nov 15: The Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO), a multi-speciality cancer hospital at Pumpwell will be inaugurated on Sunday November 18 at 10 am," said Dr Suresh Rao, director of MIO.
Addressing a press meet here on Thursday November 15, he said, "Cancer is a disease that is increasing at an alarming rate. A group of oncologists have come together to start a multi-speciality cancer hospital in Mangalore. This hospital is dedicated for the treatment of only cancer, of all types and stages."
The hospital is equipped with the new Rapid Arch treatment equipment, an imported machine that is only the second to be imported and used in India, the first being in Yashodha hospital, Hyderbad. "The basic idea is to give a multi-specialty treatment to cancer patients, at a low and affordable cost," he added.
"Ninety percent of the cancer disease is preventive and cureable. It is always better to prevent cancer rather than to find a way to cure it. It is necessary to create awareness among the public in this regard. Surgery, chemotheraphy and rehabilitation facilities are available in the hospital. Cancer education cell has also been set up to educate students with the idea of creating awareness on preventive measures and the ways to do it.
