Kannur (Kerala), Nov 13: They say love is blind. In this case, indeed it was.
Technology has made it easier for people to find love, and at the same time, proved to be haven for imposters.
A 23-year-old girl, an engineering post-graduate from Thiruvananthapuram, thought she was the love of a man she had been talking to on the phone for over a year. She too had evidently fallen for him, believing everything he said.
She had the shock of her life when her 'lover' later turned out be a 67-year-old man!
Despite talking on the phone for months, the two had never met. For their first meeting, the man had asked her to come to a particular bus stop, which she did. However, there was no sign of the man even after a long wait.
The locals who spotted the girl linger at the bus stop for so long grew suspicious and informed the police. She was then escorted to the Kotthuparmapa police station where she spilled the beans about her 'love affair'.
The police called the man's number and directed him to come to the police station. The man, whose name some sources claimed to be Ibrahim, did as he was told.
The girl, on finding that her secret lover had turned out be a 67-year-old man with grey hair, fainted of shock and despair. She later told the police that he had given her his name as 'Hamza'.
In his defense, the man claimed that he had no intention to hurt her and was speaking to her for 'fun'. He also said that he had tried to tell her she had mistaken him for someone else, but she wouldn't listen, and that is why he had set up the meeting to make matters clear. He even claimed that he had never called that girl and that it was she who called him several times a week.
The girls parents who were called to the police station had another version to give - that their daughter never had a mobile phone, and may have been calling from a friend's phone or the landline.
The girl was sent back home with the parents.
