Mangalore, Oct 30: The CPI (M) unit of Dakshina Kannada staged a protest against violence and harassment faced by women and girls over the past few days.
The protest was staged in front of the deputy commissioner's office on Tuesday October 30.
Addressing the gathering, B Madhava, CPI (M) district secretary said that cases of violence against women have been rising day by day. "Bangalore alone has witnessed several rape cases in the last few days," he added.
"This shows the inefficiency of police and the political leaders. There is no value for women and girls in the society," he said.
"Atrocities against women and girls should be condemned and government should take strict actions in providing security to them, or else a massive protest will be staged," he said.
Sriram, CPI(M) state secretary, said that the protest is being held across the country. As per the recent report by National Crime Bureau, three girls are raped every hour and this crime rate is the highest in our country, he said.
Even after several years of independence, there is no proper law ensuring security of women, and no proper punishment for rapists, he added.
Sunil Kumar Bajal, Vasanth Acharya, Padmavathi Shetty among others were part of the protest.
