Mangalore: Heavy Fog - Flight from Dubai Diverted to Kochi

Mangalore, Oct 28: With thick fog covering the region at Mangalore International Airport, Bajpe, the Air India Express flight which flew from Dubai to Mangalore was diverted to Kochi early morning on Saturday October 27.

The flight from Dubai which was supposed to land at Bajpe at 6.20 am, was diverted to Cochin International Airport due to poor visibility.

It is learnt that the flight returned after filling fuel and landed in Mangalore Airport at 10.45 am.

    Well, this time the pilots did not refuse to fly the passengers back to M'lore. Was OT paid to them???? Perhaps, YES.

    For a change, this diversion was professionally handled by AIE. The captain kept the passengers informed of the status and was clear on his actions. As soon as the flight landed in Cochin, the operations staff were on board to take care of passengers - whether it was food or even allowing them to de-plane for use of toilets in the airport etc. The pilots had completed their flying time and so we had to wait until they could get replacements but the operations staff constantly d the passengers on what was happening. Although, we were in Cochin for nearly 3 hours, there was absoultely no issues from passengers just because of the prompt action from AIE staff. This was in total contrast to what had happened a week ago where passengers where not given proper information and it created all sorts of confrontation. Hat's off to AIE for their change in attitude and to the professional staff of AIE Cochin.
    AIE needs to relook at the flying times of pilots. In critical cases where the flying time needs to be extended and it does not take more than 1 - 2 hours, it is worth giving the go ahead for the pilots to fly rather than the passengers having to wait until the new crew come from some other station. For e.g. yesterday the pilots had to come to Cochin all the way from Ernakulam and Calicut, although the pilots who were called at short notice did their best to be there it still took them 90 minutes to reach Cochin by road. The existing pilots are Mangalore based and travelled with the passengers all the way to Mangalore but could not fly due to the restrictions. The emergency pilots could only fly to Mangalore as the regular crew would then take over for the return flight. So all the trouble and delays was only to ensure a 40 minute flight from Cochin to Mangalore. Unless pilots that they are tired and cannot fly, rules must be relaxed to the benefit of all under such circumstances.
    Overall, Kudos to AIE for the way they handled the situation.
