Agartala, Oct 23 (IANS): Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar Tuesday expressed deep shock over the death of celebrated Bengali writer and Sahitya Akademi president Sunil Gangopadhyay.
"The death of an open-minded writer is an irreparable loss for Bengali literature. His writings strongly opposed all kinds of societal injustice and superstitions," Sarkar said in his condolence message.
He said Gangopadhyay's writings reflected various issues of Tripura.
Tripura Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Anil Sarkar, also a renowned poet, mourned Gangopadhyay's death saying that he was an author of common men.
Gangopadhyay died in Kolkata early Tuesday following cardiac arrest.
